Conference Overview- 2010 Orthopedic Update
January 11 - 15, 2010 Terrace BC, Canada
Set amidst the Skeena Mountain Range of Terrace BC, this CME will allow family and emergency physicians to receive first-hand educational updates from some of Canada’s leading orthopedic surgeons, emergency physicians and most experienced mountain guides and avalanche experts. The overall objective is to provide the target audience with the opportunity to interact with colleagues and allow for direct one-on-one learning from consultant orthopedic surgeons.
This program meets the accreditation criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been accredited by the BC Chapter for up to 15 Mainpro-M1 credits.
The conference venue is the Yellow Cedar Lodge, home to a relaxed meeting setting. By restricting the number of delegates to a small group (18), ample opportunity for interactions between the delegates and the faculty exists. This facility offers accommodations and food and beverage service: participants will be given the opportunity to stay within the venue through packages including three meals daily and accommodations. The Lodge includes several adventure opportunities including the operations of Northern Escape Heli-Skiing. Daily in the morning and the afternoon's conference delegates will be educated via exceptional curriculum while by day out enjoy the incredible powder filled surroundings.

This curriculum is designed to suit the educational needs of primary care and emergency physicians working in varied clinical settings. This course will cover multiple orthopedic topics that are relevant to emergency and primary care practice. Particular emphasis will be placed on the latest evidence and the current standards of practice. Through a didactic and case-based approach, this course will harness the unique skill sets of the orthopedic and emergency medicine specialists to review the “not-to-be-missed” injuries.
This conference will be structured into four educational tracks, each led by a distinguished speaker specializing in that field. Those will include: shoulder injuries, knee and spine specifics and finally an Emergency Medicine update.
The topics were chosen to provide a broad-based set of orthopedic topics commonly encountered by emergency and family medicine physicians. This is of particular relevance given the high prevalence of orthopedic injuries/problems in the primary care/emergency setting.
Learning needs were assessed by discussions with other conference organizers (St. Paul’s Emergency Medicine Update, Canadian Alpine Ski Team Medical Group, etc) and by observation of presenters and participants at Family Medicine/Emergency Medicine/Sport Medicine scientific conferences. In addition, this curriculum was designed in keeping with feedback received at a prior Track & Trail event, where delegates expressed particular interest in furthering their orthopedic knowledge.

Learning sessions are spaced throughout the day to minimize fatigue, optimize learning and maximize interaction and discussion between participants and speakers. The learning groups will be small (max 18) allowing for intimate didactic and interactive exchange and ample time for discussion during and after formal scheduled presentations.
Opportunity for a variety of recreational activities will provide a break from academic sessions and will leave participants refreshed and focused for learning and academic exchange. The academic and recreational program will both provide opportunity for professional networking and bonding.

Participants will pay $795 tuition for the curriculum and will be responsible for all of their own travel, accommodation, food and activities costs. Activities during free time include downhill skiing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and/or simply relaxing within the surrounding environment.
An optional accommodation and activities package of $4890 + 5% GST will be available to cover accommodations, meals and four days of heli-accessed skiing and snowboarding with unlimited vertical.
Additional adventures include:
• Four Days Downhill Skiing or snowboarding- Shames Mountain Resort $319 (includes transportation- Shames is known for getting the most snow over all other lift access ski destinations on the globe)
